CONTEMPORARY FINE ART

Hand painted original Art

Maeve's appreciation of theater, fashion and film has always informed her practice. She is captivated by popular culture, magazine covers, vintage posters and advertisements that depict aspiration and invoke a sense of glamour. Her Art is an extension of her study of the power of language and how it effects one’s environment. Interested in the spiritual movement that preaches about how the 'power of thought' can be used to manifest one’s desires. She typically focuses on one or two words in conjunction with the format of advertising to create an emotional response. Her process is initially ignited by a response to combat negative emotions. Drawing on a positive mantra that comes as an aid, she designs a visual representation of an outcome. Her intention has always been to create Art that has an easily identifiable meaning in a playful manner. Maeve has been developing her craft as a painter for over 10 years using oils, acrylic, enamel and spray paint.

PLAY ON OIL PAINTING

This painting was motivated by a desire to recreate a vintage PLAYBOY cover. The original words have been altered. A spin on the word PLAYBOY, PLAY ON is a tongue in cheek view of the older image. The word states VALUED instead of the typical dollar sign that you would usually see. This is due to the fact that women have previously been packaged, sold and valued on their appearance.

The words were hand drawn and painted with a glossy red enamel paint, using traditional sign writing techniques. The rest was painted in oil paint, so that there is a contrast in textures.

It has been painted on to a linen canvas that measures 50 x 70 cm in oils.

Meet the Artist.

"I've always been drawn to vintage clothes and the glamour that surrounds the 50s and 60s since I was a child. I would watch old films with my Grandmother, be in love with the clothes in her wardrobe and shop down Portobello market and in charity shops. Those early influences have always influenced my style.
I have become more interested in how women have been portrayed, seen and viewed historically. By being aware that this has often been through the 'male gaze'. My motivation is to to reclaim old fashioned images and relay a more positive comment that reflects the empowered voices of young women today. I do not want to portray women that look sad, struggling or waiting for someone to save them. In contrast to this I am fascinated by the self-improvement movement that has become a new kind of religion. As an Artist I think it is important to reflect what is happening in society. I try to do this in the simplest form, using only a couple of words at a time. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is because when I was at Art school, the most obscure work seemed get the most praise. I felt that Fine Art should not detatch itself from the common man by claiming to be so obscure that people can't understand what the meaning is or identify with it. It should speak for people and about them and be for them. Therefore, I have always wanted to spell out my meanings very clearly. Studying Fine Art also made me realise that I wanted to portray a positive message because I believe that everything has an energy and effect. I don't want to focus on the bad in the world and if I do, I want to comment on it, with a playful and uplifting tone."
